OTODOR ARMOUR fingerprint padlock

Fingerprint Padlock vs Keypad Padlock: Which Keyless Padlock Should You Buy?

A padlock is the one lock almost every Indian household owns, and the one whose key is most often lost. Smart padlocks solve that: you open them with a fingerprint or a code instead of a key. Here is how to choose one, and where they make the most sense.

Where a smart padlock helps

  • Gates and shutters of shops, godowns and garages, where several people need access.
  • Store rooms, sheds and terrace doors at home.
  • Lockers at the gym, office or school.
  • Bags and suitcases when travelling.
  • Rented spaces and PGs, where keys keep getting copied.

Fingerprint vs keypad

Fingerprint padlocks

You enrol the fingers of the people who should have access. Opening takes a second, and there is nothing to share, lose or copy. Fingerprint padlocks are ideal when the same few people open the lock every day.

OTODOR ARMOUR is a keyless fingerprint padlock with an armoured body, made for gates, shutters, lockers, sheds and store rooms. It costs ₹1,899 at the time of writing. We also offer FREDDY, a compact fingerprint padlock, on request.

Keypad padlocks

You open them with a code, which you can share with anyone over the phone and change later. Keypad padlocks suit places where access changes often, like a shared store room or a holiday home.

OTODOR VAULTEX is our smart keypad padlock, priced at ₹1,200 at the time of writing.

What to check before buying

  1. Body and shackle strength: a hardened shackle and metal body resist cutting and prying.
  2. Weather resistance: for gates and shutters, choose a padlock made for outdoor use.
  3. Battery and charging: check how it charges and how it warns you before the battery runs low.
  4. Number of users: make sure it stores enough fingerprints or codes for everyone.
  5. Size: measure the hasp or chain the shackle must pass through.
