Smart Curtain Motors: How Motorised Curtains Work and What to Check Before You Buy
Share
Motorised curtains used to belong to hotels and show flats. Today a quiet motor fits on an ordinary curtain track in a few hours, and you open the curtains from your phone, a wall switch, a remote or your voice. Here is how it works and what to check before you buy.

How a smart curtain motor works
A small motor sits at one end of the curtain track and pulls a belt inside it. The curtain hooks ride on runners in the track, so the motor opens and closes the curtain smoothly and stops at the ends on its own. A receiver inside the motor listens for the app, the remote, a smart switch or a voice assistant.
What you can do with them
- Open and close from anywhere: from bed, from the sofa or from another city.
- Morning schedules: let daylight in at the same time every day.
- Voice control: ask Alexa to open the living room curtains.
- Privacy and heat: close west-facing curtains in the afternoon to keep rooms cooler.
- Tall and hard-to-reach windows: double-height living rooms and large glass walls stop being a chore.

What to check before you buy
- Window width and curtain weight: heavy blackout curtains on a wide window need a stronger motor and a sturdy track.
- Power point: the motor needs a socket near one end of the track. Plan it before painting or false-ceiling work.
- Ceiling or wall mounting: both work. A ceiling pocket hides the track for a cleaner look.
- Single or centre-opening: decide whether the curtain opens to one side or parts in the middle.
- Control: list how each person at home will use it: app, switch, remote or voice.
New home or existing home?
New homes are easiest, because the power point and ceiling pocket can be planned with your interior designer. In an existing home, the track usually replaces your current rod or channel and the motor plugs into a nearby socket.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still pull the curtain by hand?
Ask us about this for your window during the quote, as it depends on the track and motor set-up.
Will it work with my existing curtains?
Usually yes. The curtain needs hooks or rings that fit the new track runners, which we check during the visit.
