Security Alarm System for Shops, Showrooms and Homes: A Practical Guide

Many shops and homes rely on CCTV alone. Cameras are excellent for evidence, but they do not stop anything. An intrusion alarm does: the moment a door or window opens after hours, a siren sounds and your phone gets an alert. Here is how to plan one.

The parts of an alarm system

  • Door and window sensors: tell the system when something opens.
  • Motion sensors: cover rooms and corridors.
  • Siren: makes the break-in loud and public.
  • Control panel and app: arm and disarm, and get alerts on your phone.

Start with the doors

Every break-in starts at an opening. Our DORLA door and window sensor fixes to a main door, back door, window or store room and tells you the moment it opens.

Planning by type of property

Shops and showrooms

Cover the main entrance, any back door and the shutter. Add motion sensors near the counter and the safe. For jewellery showrooms, pair the alarm with a drop-bolt glass door lock.

Homes

Cover the main door, the balcony and any ground-floor windows. Arm the system at night and when you travel. See our home security checklist.

Factories and warehouses

Cover the store rooms, the office and the loading doors, and keep the siren where the guard can hear it.

Five questions before you buy

  1. How many doors, windows and rooms need cover?
  2. Who should get alerts, and on which phones?
  3. Does the siren need to be heard outside?
  4. Is there reliable power and Wi-Fi at the site?
  5. Who will install it and service it?
